The nature of Moselle and Moselle region
Perfect for your holiday - whether by bicycle or on foot
Surrounded by mountains, meadows and forests, the well-known Moselle loops run. Its source is in France at the Col de Bussang, and along its course it forms a natural border with Saarland and Luxembourg, flowing from west to east through Rhineland-Palatinate. Before the Moselle empties into the Rhine at Koblenz after a total length of 544 kilometers, it separates the Eifel region to the north from the Hunsrück region to the south.
Vineyards have been a defining feature of the Moselle Valley landscape since Roman times. Whether on steep slopes, terraces, or flatter areas, the slate typical of the Moselle region is perfect for viticulture. While it makes planting more difficult, it stores the sun's warmth, releases it overnight, and protects the Moselle vines from frost on particularly cold spring and autumn nights.

The history and culture of the Moselle and the Moselle Valley
A Moselle holiday will enchant you - read why...
The starting position
Trade brings change – with this ancient wisdom, the history and culture of the Greater Moselle Region and the Moselle Valley have much in common. Due to its geographical location, the Moselle connects three countries, is navigable over 394 kilometers and has approx. 129 bridges. Of course, the development of the culture of the Moselle region as we know it today began much earlier.
The events
In most places, the Romans are certainly responsible for one of the largest developmental flare-ups of over 2,000 years ago. But also the church, the nobility, various knightly orders and the French neighbors have contributed to the emergence of today's way of life and culture in the Moselle Valley.
Contemporary witnesses can still be found everywhere on the Moselle and around it. Whether the infinitely many legacy of the Romans, such as the Porta Nigra and the Kaiserthermen in Trier or the wine-growing, for which the many wine pressures were built in the Moselle valley.
Or the countless Stations of the Cross, wayside shrines and chapels of the church communities, which can be found in the vineyards or on the old trade routes along the Moselle.
Immediately followed by the knights and the partly magnificent castles left by them, as well as the nobility history of the Moselle Valley and the associated buildings such as castles and palaces. Also today there is still an attraction in the sundials in the vineyards.
The result
All this has shaped the Moselle Valley over the centuries and made the culture what it is today. A wonderful mix of scenery, pleasure, history and modernity. Fairytale streams, wonderful views and dreamy tuxed-exercised places with plenty of space for hiking and cycling.
Let yourself be enchanted and spend your holiday on the Moselle here in the wine region.

Wellness & Deluxe in the Moselle Valley on the Moselle Cycle Path and Mosel Trail
Vacation on the Moselle at the highest level
Even those who like to refine their cycling holiday or hiking holiday in the Mosel Valley with Wellness & Deluxe will get their money's worth on the Moselsteig Trail and Moselle Cycle Path. There is a rather respectable repertoire of 4 and 4.5 star hotels in the Moselle Valley, which are almost all equipped with their own wellness area and enjoy great popularity.
So you can also relax and enjoy the experiences of the day during your Moselle vacation by bike or hiking.

The enjoyment - the best typical Moselle dishes
To the delight of taste and enjoyment, the development of the multicultural history of the Moselle Valley has not passed without a trace even in the culinary delight. This statement is demonstrated by many restaurants, but especially the lovingly operated wine taverns on the Moselle.
Most typical Moselle dishes are entirely focused on winegrowing and the associated physical work – so they can be hearty and nutritious.
Take, for example, what is probably the most important dish in the Moselle Valley: Kappes-Teerdisch, also called Gräwes. It's a mixture of mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, and bacon. Traditionally, it's served with Kasseler (smoked pork loin) and roasted onion rings. A similar dish found in the Moselle region is Schoales, also known as Dibbelabbes or Döppekoche. Behind this rustic name lies a tasty potato casserole with bacon, which has a different name in almost every village along the Moselle.
Meals from the Moselle region that taste just as good, but leave room for more afterward, include Cochem onion wine meat ("Zwiwwelfleisch") or the well-known "Tresterfleisch," which is marinated for days in Moselle wine and grape brandy before being prepared for consumption. Equally delicious during a Moselle holiday are, of course, the ever-popular potato pancakes ("Krumpernschnietcher"), potato sausage ("Krommbierewoscht"), or marinated and grilled pork neck on a wooden skewer ("Mosel-Wingertspoal").
Recipes featuring fish, such as Moselle pike-perch or Moselle eel with cranberries, scrambled eggs, or chives, are also part of the Moselle cuisine repertoire. Other specialties include Riesling soup and wine cream. And it's particularly interesting to discover the many dishes that can be made from the vineyard peaches of the Moselle Valley...
MOSELLE vacation - with us your taste buds will be fully satisfied.
The Moselle wine
Epitome of the vacation MOSEL
Whether it's world-famous vineyards like "Brauneberger Juffer", "Bernkasteler Doctor", "Wehlener Sonnenuhr", "Erdener Treppchen", "Piesporter Goldtröpfchen" and "Bremmer Calmont". Or the now diverse grape varieties cultivated on the slopes of the Moselle Valley.
Above all, Riesling takes first place in the Moselle region, Germany's most popular grape variety. It has been cultivated for over 600 years and is highly regarded worldwide. Its juicy grapes, ripened in late summer, give Riesling a vibrant and full-bodied flavor. Abundant sunshine and its warmth impart a wealth of aromatic qualities to the vines. Whether your Moselle Riesling is dry, off-dry, or sweet - all varieties are distinguished by their unique character and are considered elegant and refined.
But the grape varieties Pinot Noir, Dornfelder, Müller-Thurgau (Rivaner), Pinot Blanc, and Kerner are also used to produce Moselle wine and thrive in the warmth and sunshine of the Moselle slate soil in the Moselle Valley. This soil not only ensures good yields but also provides an excellent foundation for top-quality wines.
Enjoy it during your vacation on the Moselle...
Entertainment options on the Moselle
Why not combine your Moselle vacation with some special entertainment?
The Moselle Valley is located in western Germany, close to Belgium, Luxembourg and France, making it perfect for further entertainment options during your vacation on the Moselle.
This means you not only have immediate access to excursion options such as wildlife and leisure parks, castles, palaces and museums, but also excellent opportunities for relaxation in thermal baths and leisure pools.
From the late summer months
A visit to one of the wine and street festivals typical of the Moselle region is a must during your Moselle vacation. And for classical music lovers, the annual Moselle Music Festival is highly recommended.
Best time to visit and weather for your Moselle holiday
What is the weather like in the Moselle region?
The Moselle is located in a protected valley between the two low mountain ranges Eifel in the north and Hunsrück in the south. Due to this valley, there is a rather mild climate on the Moselle with warm temperatures and many hours of sunshine, which both the local winemakers and our hikers and cyclists appreciate very much.
From March to November, therefore, there is generally nothing to prevent a Moselle vacation and the weather is usually suitable for cycling and hiking. Especially in autumn, stable and sunny weather periods are frequent.

When is the best time to go cycling on the Moselle?
From spring until late autumn, the Moselle and the Moselle Cycle Path have their special charm at all times.
For many, late summer is the most popular time for cycling tours on the Moselle Cycle Path. This is because the foliage of the forests on the hills to the left and right of the Moselle River slowly begins to glow in a multitude of colors. At the same time, the harvest season begins, the so-called grape harvest in the Moselle wine region. During this time, the Moselle Valley celebrates its many wine and street festivals, for which the winegrowing villages are beautifully decorated, and it is traditional to sample the young wine, also known as Federweißer, with delicious onion tart.
If you're planning a cycling holiday on the Moselle for late summer or early autumn, book early – ideally before the New Year. Accommodation at wineries and winegrowers' farms is particularly scarce and highly sought after.
Our tip:
Cycle along the Moselle in early summer! Wait until all the holiday weekends are over and discover the Moselle Valley in its early summer green attire.
When is the best time to go hiking on the Moselle?
In spring and summer, hiking on the Moselsteig Trail offers the chance to encounter rare natural beauties such as the Apollo butterfly, the praying mantis, and the European green lizard. The Moselsteig Trail also boasts the largest stand of wild boxwood north of the Alps.
In autumn, the colorful steep slopes of the Moselle Valley attract mainly wine lovers who combine hiking in one of Germany's oldest wine-growing regions with culture and enjoyment.
Thanks to its atmospheric Christmas markets and romantic New Year's celebrations, the Moselle holiday region transforms into a fairytale destination. Hiking on selected sections of the Moselsteig Trail is even possible in winter.
Our tip:
Visit the Moselle Wine Christmas Market in the vaulted cellars of Traben-Trarbach between Advent and New Year's!
